We're searching for an entry-level lighting designer to join our nationally recognized Lighting Studio.
The RDG Lighting Studio works collaboratively across RDG offices, markets and disciplines and provides consulting services to partner firms and private clients. We’re looking for an imaginative, detail-oriented, organized individual who is motivated to participate creatively with our team and our clients and who can enhance our ability to provide technically sound lighting design solutions.
As an RDG Lighting Designer, you'll have the opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals who've had a direct hand in creative design solutions and writing and updating local design standards. In this role, you'll focus on a variety of project types, including work for RDG’s College and University, Healthcare and Parks and Recreation Markets, and projects related to Worship, Sports and Athletic facilities, Museums and illuminating art pieces across the country. Along the way, you'll hone your skills and contribute to work that enhances communities regionally and nationally. You will also grow professionally and have opportunities to explore new technologies and research lighting advancements in the industry as it pertains to human health and wellness.
Essential Job Functions
Work with architectural project teams on all aspects of the art, science and business of lighting design in a collaborative multi-disciplinary environment
Perform lighting design tasks including complete lighting concepts and designs, luminaire selections, detail development and documentation, client presentation development, photometric lighting calculations and renderings, BIM/Model production, lighting controls, energy and economic calculations and specifications
Perform Construction Administration (CA) tasks for lighting projects including site observations, pre-wire lighting controls meetings and commissioning of lighting control systems in the field along with aiming and adjusting accent fixtures
Work with lighting studio staff in the creation of full-scale working lighting mock-ups in our lighting lab
Requirements
Enthusiastic about lighting, learning and collaborating
Proficient in REVIT, AutoCAD, AGI, Bluebeam, Adobe Studio, ElumTools and Microsoft Office
Demonstrates ingenuity and creativity
Experience with daylighting simulation and/or calculation software is a plus
Knowledge of lighting control systems (ETC, Lutron, HCS, nLight, Crestron, Watt-Stopper, etc.)
Knowledge of LEED and/or WELL standards is a plus
Familiarity/ basic knowledge of NFPA 70, ASHRAE, IECC codes and the National Electrical Code
Education/Experience
Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in interior or lighting design or related degree with 0-3 years of experience (We would also consider candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, interior design, architectural/engineering (BSAE) with an emphasis in lighting design or a related degree and 3-5 years experience)
Membership in IES and LC registration is preferred
Additional skills and experience required
Ability to travel between various RDG offices and project locations as required
Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
Working knowledge of electricity and wiring techniques for lighting sample assembly/ installation
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required
Location: Des Moines (may consider Denver, Omaha or St. Louis)
